Dinosaurs of the Sea
words & music by David Heitler-Klevans, © 1998

Many species of whales are in danger of becoming extinct like dinosaurs.  Since lots of kids like dinosaurs, we thought that making this connection might encourage efforts to save whales from disappearing from the earth.

I thought that the dinosaurs were the biggest of them all
But an animal still lives which makes them seem quite small
It would take two of the heaviest dinosaurs
to weigh as much as one blue whale - a-swimming off our shores

    (Chorus:)
We’ll never hear the roar of a dinosaur
The only place you’ll see ‘em is inside a museum
It would be a shame if whales end up the same
Don’t let them be the dinosaurs of the sea.

None of our ancestors who lived so long before us
Ever caught a glimpse of the fierce Tyrannosaurus
But I want my great-grand-kids, and their grandchildren too
to still find gentle, noble whales living in the oceans blue

    (Chorus)

(Bridge:)
Blubber for oil, and meat for food
Hunted for hundreds of years
Threatened by pollution and injured by boats
Soon they may all disappear

Nobody knows for sure why the dinosaurs disappeared
But if the whales go too, the reasons will be clear
People are the cause, we fill their lives with sorrow
If we don’t change our harmful ways, there’ll be no whales tomorrow.

    (Chorus)
