Album: So Many Ways To Be Smart
Lyrics: David was involved in a community
playground-building project at our sons’ former school in Philadelphia,
and he wrote this song for the ribbon-cutting ceremony. We
dedicate this song to all who work to build community, and particularly
the volunteers at the Houston School and Wall Park playgrounds.
(Chorus:)
We’ve got a playground, a new playground
We worked together, in all kinds of weather
We’re building unity, in our community
We’ve got a new playground now.
Put your hand in the air if you led a crew -
We wouldn’t have a playground if it wasn’t for you
Put your hand in the air if you hammered a nail -
You made sure this project would not fail
Put your hand in the air if you sanded a board -
Your contribution cannot be ignored
Put your hand in the air if your muscles got sore -
You were always willing to give some more
(Chorus)
Put your hand in the air if you brought food to eat -
You helped the volunteers stay on their feet
Put your hand in the air if you did childcare -
You made it so that parents could be there
Put your hand in the air if you lent a tool -
We think you are really cool
Put your hand in the air if you worked in the rain -
Your sacrifice is the neighborhood’s gain
(Chorus)
Put your hand in the air if you spread the word -
You helped make sure everybody heard
Put your hand in the air if you raised some money -
We think you are sweeter than honey
Put your hand in the air if you went to a meeting -
We know your commitment was not fleeting
Put your hand in the air if you did your part -
We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
(Chorus)
