Coconut Trees
Jenny wrote this hopeful calypso/reggae song after the Indonesian tsunami a number of years ago, and it became part of the repertoire of our "grown-up" group, Acoustic Blender. We recorded this right after the Japanese tsunami.
(Chorus:)
The coconut trees are standing by the water
Hundreds of roots go deep into the sand
The trees hold on, through the crashing waves
Bending with the wind, together they stand
(Verse 1:)
When disaster came, everything changed
In the blink of an eye, the world was rearranged
People were lost, destruction all around
But some of the trees were still planted in the ground
(Chorus)
(Instrumental Chorus)
(Verse 2:)
As the weeks go by, months and then years
People pick up the pieces and wipe away the tears
Helping each other, finding common ground
Rebuilding the community our roots go down
(Chorus)
(Bridge:)
We've got to hold on, hold on to each other
Make a connection where none was there before
We've got to grow roots, deep into the earth
And like the coconut trees, we'll find a way to endure
(Chorus - 2x)
(Tag:)
Bending with the wind, together they stand (2x)
